Truthfully, there's no bad time to visit Canmore—or anywhere in the Rockies, really—but fall has a way of making the mountain scenery even more spectacular and a bit cozier. Golden larch trees line the trails, fresh snow begins to dust the peaks, and the crowds of summer hikers give way to a quieter, slower pace. This time of year marks the shoulder season, a transition between high-energy summer days and the full embrace of winter. But don’t let that fool you. There’s still plenty happening around town. From seasonal markets and art festivals to spooky tours and mountain runs, this season's Canmore events calendar is packed with things for every kind of traveler (or local!).
Whether you’re looking for something quick for a weekend getaway or wondering how to fill an entire week here, here are the best things to do in Canmore fall 2025.
Canmore Festival of Art & Creativity
September 12–14, 2025
The Canmore Festival of Art & Creativity returns for its 10th year, filling downtown with three days of free, family-friendly fun celebrating the town's creative community. Expect an upbeat mix of outdoor concerts, interactive art workshops, and community campfires where stories and songs come together. One highlight is Bike Shorts, a beloved short-film showcase by and for cyclists—ranging from adrenaline-fueled downhill rides to leisurely local cruises. The nighttime market and performances are always fan favourites, also.
Canmore Mountain Market
Thursdays through October 2
Every Thursday through early October (starting in May), the Canmore Mountain Market turns the plaza just outside Elevation Place into a hub of local flavor. It’s one of those rare markets where nearly everything comes from within a few hours’ drive: farm-fresh produce, pasture-raised meats, baked goods, preserves, coffee, and even locally roasted nuts and honey. Artisans from across the Bow Valley also set up shop, selling items like pottery, jewelry, textiles, and handmade soaps. Grab a snack, chat with the makers, and enjoy the mountain views while you browse. It’s a beloved weekly ritual for locals and an easy addition to any what to do in Canmore list.
Canmore Ghost Walk
Friday & Saturdays in October
Join a guided Ghost Walk on Friday or Saturday evenings throughout October to uncover the town’s spookier side. These walks dig into the Bow Valley’s allegedly haunted history, from mysterious disappearances to long-whispered legends surrounding old hotels and mining sites. Guided by a costumed local storyteller, you’ll explore hidden lanes and historic streets while hearing tales that might just raise a few goosebumps.
Canmore Pride Festival
October 4–12, 2025
One of the season's most uplifting Canmore events, the Pride Festival transforms the town into a colorful, welcoming celebration of inclusivity each October. Over the course of a week, local businesses and community groups host drag brunches, dance parties, panel discussions, film screenings, and so much more. Outdoor events like hikes and climbing meetups add a uniquely mountain-town twist.
Fall Races at the Canmore Nordic Centre
Canmore’s world-class Nordic Centre isn’t just a winter playground; it’s also home to some of Alberta’s most exciting fall races. If you're looking for active things to do in Canmore fall 2025 beyond the quintessential hikes, look no further.
Grizzly Ultra Marathon (October 12–13) – Known for its challenging yet scenic course, the Grizzly Ultra welcomes runners of all levels. Participants can tackle the full 50K solo or as part of a two- or five-person relay team. There’s even a short (free!) kids’ run, making it a full weekend of community spirit and endurance.
Sweater Weather 5K & 10K (October 18) – A more relaxed option, this run combines crisp mountain air with cozy autumn vibes. Participants often lean into the theme, donning scarves, 'ugly' sweaters, and other fun costumes. And of course, celebratory treats will be waiting at the finish line.
Strides & Glides (October 24) – This unique event combines trail running and cross-country skiing into one competition, with proceeds supporting local ski clubs. The format, a 3K run followed by a 3K ski, draws everyone from serious athletes to casual outdoor enthusiasts.
Canmore Wild Festival
Mid-October into November
Each fall, the Wild Festival (formerly called the Festival of Eagles) honours the golden eagles that soar high above the Bow Valley as they migrate south with a week of nature-focused activities. Expect guided walks, expert talks, and family-friendly programs across town and in nearby Kananaskis Country. You can join a counting excursion, learn about local conservation efforts, or simply soak up the crisp fall air surrounded by mountain views.
Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival
November 1-9, 2025
A short drive from Canmore in Banff town, this world-renowned festival celebrates 50 years in 2025. Filmmakers, authors, and explorers from around the globe come together to share stories of adventure, mountain culture, and the natural world. Attendees can expect a packed lineup of screenings, readings, and panel discussions, ranging from breathtaking alpine documentaries to thought-provoking talks on sustainability, as well as evening socials.
Creative Combat
November 15, 2025
artsPlace Canmore wraps up the season with its biggest, most spirited fundraiser of the year: Creative Combat. During this lively evening, 12 local artists face off in timed painting rounds, creating original works in just 20 minutes while a live DJ keeps the energy high. Guests can mingle, sample food and cocktails from local vendors, and bid on the freshly made art during live and silent auctions, all in support of arts programming throughout the Bow Valley.
And if you’re in Canmore and looking for a place to stay, check out the vacation rental suites within the Solara Resort managed by Bellstar. These spacious 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom suites feature full kitchens, private bedrooms, spa-inspired bathrooms, and cozy living areas, which make great options for families, couples, and small groups.
